| The teams have gone to Chumpi. The fourth
team, led by Randy Sorrow, will be returning September 2, 2005. This article
is an update of what God has been doing in Chumpi through Old Fort Baptist
Church. It is a great privilege to partner with God in this work and He
has already been glorified through what has happened. However, we
believe that even greater things are going to happen for His glory!
Team 1, led by Dr. Lethco, departed May 26. Several team members testified to God’s miraculous provision enabling them to go. While there, they began with prayer walking and door-to-door evangelism. They showed the Jesus video to a packed house, generating much interest in the Gospel. Several decisions to follow Christ were made during that trip. One person in particular, Daniel, showed great enthusiasm and began to be discipled. Team 2, a medical team led by Dr. Redwine, departed June 1. Immediate opposition was encountered when the medications did not make it through customs. The team faced confusion and discouragement early on but God always prevailed! He provided a way to obtain more medications in Peru which turned out to be even better. This allowed leftover medication to be left utilized in impoverished areas. Our partners in Nazca worked with the medical team and presented the Gospel to several hundred people who came through the medical clinic. The first baptism was held during this trip, and Daniel was baptized. Team 3, led by Scott Cannon, departed July 12. They also faced immediate opposition by finding that their trucks were not available for rental upon their arrival at the airport at 11:30 PM. The next obstacle they faced was a roadblock on the way to Nazca with no alternate routes. They decided to pull over and pray before they reached the roadblock, and minutes before they reached the roadblock it was removed. Again God showed His faithfulness and His total control! The team testified that constant change characterized their trip. They were led to minister to the community through many acts of service. This included hauling rocks, shelling beans, and working in the farms. God used these servant acts to continue to build relationships and further the Gospel. They witnessed Daniel baptizing three new believers that he had led to Christ. They also witnessed small groups being established and beginning to meet weekly. |
Jonathan Edney was our summer missionary
in Peru. He arrived with the first team and departed in late July. He worked
with two other summer missionaries and God also led two young men from
the Nazca church to stay the summer. God used this team of five to provide
continuity and to begin discipling the new believers. They too faced opposition;
early attempts to disciple new believers met with much resistance. They
did not want to meet in groups, but instead one-on-one. Eventually this
one-on-one discipling led to small groups meeting which grew to a size
of fifteen. God also began to raise up leaders amongst these new
believers and more intense discipling took place with these individuals.
The first Lord’s Supper was held with seventeen people attending. Jonathan
says his most recent contact with the group confirms that they are still
meeting.
Team 5, led by Erik Shamblin, will depart on September 15. Team 6, led by Moses Clark, will depart on October 13. These three teams will continue this work of building a new church in Chumpi, Peru. Currently we are praying about the possibility of more teams going this winter. As you can see, God has accomplished much in a short period of time! When we first faced the challenge of planting a church in a foreign land, we felt overwhelmed and inadequate. God has reminded us through these incredible events that He is in total control. As our pastor says, it is our availability - not our ability. Please pray about your role in this vision and join the great adventure! MORE TO FOLLOW… A WORD FROM OUR EDITOR – Please be in prayer for Team 6 as they prepare to depart on October 13. This team will be carrying eyeglasses, meds and equipment to Peru for an eye clinic. Pray that God will protect these important items from being confiscated in customs. Please remember to pray for the new church start in Chumpi. To God be the glory for all the work he is doing in Peru and through Old Fort Baptist Church! |
